Senate Bill 100 is currently under consideration by the Montana Legislature. The bill proposes increasing how often the state verifies the eligibility of recipients to receive benefits under Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). To better understand how these changes might affect the health of people currently on the program, we spoke with Professor Leighton Ku and Erin Brantley at George Washington University. Professor Ku is a national expert on the subject, and he developed the estimates that Montana and the U.S. agency that oversees state Medicaid programs (the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS) use to estimate the impacts of various approaches to verifying eligibility for the program. Professor Ku’s estimates were used in Montana’s fiscal note on SB 100.
